Shoulder Dystocia-A Clinical Action Plan



Shoulder Dystocia (SD) is an obstetrical complication that occurs in approximately 1 in 100 vaginal deliveries. Shoulder Dystocia that affects the brachial plexus may potentially cause lifelong injuries with disability to the newborn. This course will provide a summary of SD claims, a review of shoulder dystocia, risk factors and clinical actions to help prevent newborn injury and minimize obstetrical risk.

CME Credit: 1 hour





The objectives of the program are to:

  • Summarize shoulder dystocia claims experience.
  • Define shoulder dystocia.
  • Discuss risk factors for shoulder dystocia.
  • Review maneuvers to help avoid brachial plexus injury.
  • Describe an action plan for physicians and staff during the delivery.
  • Justify the appropriate documentation during antepartum and intrapartum care, and communication after delivery.

Each course includes a test. Completed tests are electronically submitted to MAG Mutual by using the "Submit" button at the end of the test. A passing score is 80% or above. If you achieve a passing score, a certificate of completion will be mailed to the address you will give on your test. You must use either Internet Explorer (version 3.0 or higher), or Netscape Navigator (Version 3.0 or higher) to take this test online. If you wish to take a written version of this test, please contact us. You must complete the evaluation at the end of the test before credit can be awarded. Your test form will be electronically scored and the results immediately displayed on your screen.
