Atlanta, GA (July 1, 2011) – Dr. Joseph S. Wilson, Jr. assumed his new position today as Chairman and CEO. Former Chairman and CEO, Dr. Roy W. Vandiver, retired on June 30, 2011.

“I am pleased to have had the opportunity to lead MagMutual for the past 11 years and am delighted the Board chose Joe to replace me.  Joe’s father, Joe Wilson, Sr., was one of the Company’s founding board members.  He, along with 14 other visionary physicians, put in their own money to form an insurance company owned by its physician policyholders, with the mission to put the physician policyholder first.  Joe Wilson, Jr. has been a Board member since 1999. He is a link to our origins, but will guide us to a marvelous future,” said Dr. Vandiver.

Dr. Wilson had been working with MagMutual on a part-time basis, as he wound down his own cardiology practice at Cardiology of Atlanta.

“I am honored to follow Roy as Chairman and CEO of MagMutual,” said Dr. Wilson.  “The landscape of healthcare in the United States is rapidly changing, and MagMutual is uniquely positioned on a firm foundation set by Roy and our previous leaders – one that has the company ranked as the ninth largest medical liability insurer in the nation.  We will continue to make strides, and maintain focus on our core business: taking care of our physician policyholders and giving them what they need.  I am excited about our future.”

Dr. Wilson has served on MagMutual’s Board since 1999, is Board Certified in cardiology and interventional cardiology, and is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology.  His abilities are widely recognized and he was selected by Atlanta Magazine as one of their “Top Doctors.”  Dr. Wilson has also served as Governor of the American College of Cardiology and President of the Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology.

In addition to his numerous volunteer activities, Dr. Wilson conducts lab reviews for the No Longer Bound Regeneration Program, and conducts cardiovascular screenings for both local high schools and the Atlanta Thrashers.  He also volunteered as Community Physician for 13 years with Rabun County Clinics.  Wilson is an avid runner and has served as the Medical Director of the Peachtree Road Race for the past 22 years.  He and his wife Sharon have two daughters attending the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
