Dr. William Kirby had an interest in becoming a physician since a very early age thanks to a positive impression made by the caring pediatrician who took care of him. That, combined with his love of science, led him to earn his Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Millsaps College and MD from the University of Mississippi school of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine at Baptist Health Systems in Birmingham, Alabama and was chief medical resident in internal medicine from 1997-1998.
Two years after starting practice in rural Marshall County, Alabama, Dr. Kirby moved to the Simon-Williamson Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama, where he continues to practice general internal medicine. He has been active in the management of this multi-specialty, physician-owned and managed group, serving previously on quality and finance committees and, since 2016, as president and managing partner. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Kirby engages in clinical research and in training future internists as a clinical instructor with Baptist Health Systems’ Internal Medicine residency program.
Dr. Kirby has always been committed to quality care and patient safety, and has reviewed cases for the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners and other expert review duties since 2006. As a policyholder with MagMutual, he has been part of the claims evaluation process and was chairman of the Alabama Claims Committee for several years before becoming a member of the MagMutual Board of Directors in 2020. Dr. Kirby currently serves on the Audit Risk and Government Affairs committees.
